Standard equipment in the Taurus for 1998 and 1999 includes the 3.0 liter engine by Ford, weighing in at 6 cylinders and twelve valves. A 4-speed Automatic Transaxle puts the power of the Vulcan engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Taurus.

The fuel system for the 1999 Taurus is a traditional SFI, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 16.00 gallons.
