The Ford F-150 XLT for 2002: Improving on 2001

In 2002 Ford released the F-150 XLT to the truck-buying market. The F-150 came in six configurations: XLT, Harley-Davidson Edition, Lightning, King Ranch, and Lariat. The XLT configuration is powered by the 5.4-liter eight-cylinder engine, which makes 19 - 21 highway miles and 15 - 17 city. The F-150 competes in the Standard Cab Pickup market segment, in direct competition with Kia.

Engine Performance

The F-150 XLT is equipped with a Ford 5.4 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Triton engine is mated to a Ford 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Ford.

The F-150 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

F-150 XLT Statistics

The dimensions of the F-150 XLT are 79.30 inches wide by 206.90 inches long. It sits a comfortable 72.70 inches off the ground. It seats a standard three passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 119.90 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The listed retail price in 2002 (MSRP) was $19,550, with an invoice cost of $17,309. This price is slightly higher than the industry average price for a two-door Standard Cab Pickup.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel is handled for the F-150 is a SFI design, running on BI-FUEL fuel. The BI-FUEL is handled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 25.00 gallons.

The F-150 XLT received a miles-per-gallon rating of 15 - 17 in-city driving and 19 - 21 when it came to long-distance. Being a bi-fuel-powered hybrid truck, this was subpar.
