There have been several award-winning cars from Toyota over the years, including the Toyota Prius of 2008. There are two trim levels to the Prius, including Touring and Base. The Base version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 2007 the popular 1.5 liter has made this a popular choice for hatchback buyers nationwide.

2008 Toyota Prius Base Specs

Standard equipment in the Prius for 2007 and 2008 includes the 1.5 liter engine by Toyota, weighing in at 4 cylinders and sixteen valves. A 4-speed Automatic CVT Transaxle puts the power of the engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Prius.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Prius comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

The fuel system for the 2008 Prius is a SFI design, using ELECTRIC/GAS fuel. The fuel flow is controlled by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 11.90 gallons.

The dimensions of the Prius Base are 67.90 inches wide by 175.00 inches long. It sits 58.70 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 106.30 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The standard warranty period for the Prius is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the hatchback market.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $22,475 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $20,695. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Hatchback.

MPG Ratings

The 2008 Prius gets 45 miles/gallon on the highway and only 48 in the city. This is below average for a hatchback car.

In 2007 and 2008 the Prius Base was availble in the exterior colors of Barcelona Red Metallic, Black, Classic Silver Metallic, Driftwood Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Seaside Pearl, Silver Pine Metallic, Spectra Blue, and Super White. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.

Parting Shots

There are several reasons why the Toyota Prius Base sold well in 2008. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Toyota, specifically a Prius.
