Ford has been blessed with many award-winning designs, including the Ford Explorer Sport Trac of 2003. There are two trim levels to the Explorer Sport Trac, including XLS and XLT. The XLT version is one of the more popular options. Like in 2002 the popular 4.0 liter has made this a popular choice for sport utility buyers around the world.

Performance

The Explorer Sport Trac XLT is equipped with a Ford 4.0 liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The engine is mated to a Ford 5-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Ford.

The Explorer Sport Trac uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The truck uses torsion bar and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

The fuel system for the 2003 Explorer Sport Trac is a traditional EFI, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 22.40 gallons.

Explorer Sport Trac XLT Statistics

The dimensions of the Explorer Sport Trac XLT are 71.80 inches wide by 205.90 inches long. It sits a comfortable 70.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 125.90 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The standard warranty period for the Explorer Sport Trac is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36 months or 36,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the sport utility market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $25,380 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $22,023. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2003 Explorer Sport Trac gets 20 miles/gallon on the highway and only 16 in the city. This is average for a sport utility truck.

In 2002 and 2003 the Explorer Sport Trac XLT was availble in the exterior colors of Black, Estate Green Metallic, Harvest Gold Metallic, Oxford White, and True Blue Metallic. Additional options were made available by the factory.

In Summary

The 2002 model began the promise of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The 2003 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Ford hopes that the Explorer Sport Trac XLT will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
