A high point in the sport utility market is the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. In 2005 Ford released an upgraded version of the Explorer Sport Trac with three versions: XLT, XLS, and Adrenalin. Sales for the Explorer Sport Trac, especially the Explorer Sport Trac XLT, were brisk during 2005 and 2006. The improved reliability and the sporty styling were responsible for the sales boost.

Ford Explorer Sport Trac Engine Specs

Standard equipment in the Explorer Sport Trac for 2004 and 2005 includes the 4.0 liter engine by Ford, weighing in at 6 cylinders and twelve valves. A 5-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the engine to the pavement. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Sport Utility arena.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Explorer Sport Trac comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses torsion bar front springs and leaf in the rear.

The fuel system for the 2005 Explorer Sport Trac is a traditional SFI, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 22.50 gallons.

The dimensions of the Explorer Sport Trac XLT are 71.80 inches wide by 205.90 inches long. It sits 70.50 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 125.90 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

There is a 36,000 mile, 36 month warranty with this vehicle, including a powertrain warranty of 36,000/36 miles/months. This is normal for this price range.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $28,785 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $25,831. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

MPG Ratings

The Explorer Sport Trac XLT received a miles-per-gallon rating of sixteen in-city driving and twenty one when it came to highway driving. Being a flex-powered green truck, this was exceptional.

In 2004 and 2005 the Explorer Sport Trac XLT was availble in the exterior colors of Black, Bright Red, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, Dark Stone Metallic, Oxford White, Pueblo Gold Metallic, Red Fire, and Silver Birch Metallic.

What We Think of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac

The 2004 model began the promise of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The 2005 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Ford hopes that the Explorer Sport Trac XLT will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
