Several things can be said about the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series: including the polarizing reactions most buyers have towards their truck. The eight-cylinder engine is at the heart of the strong emotions, it is powerful for its class and delivers a large amount of torque.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Specs

The restyled Silverado 1500 LS is equipped with a 5.3-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a General Motors four-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2002 version.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The Silverado 1500 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and leaf in the rear.

The fuel system for the 2003 Silverado 1500 is a traditional SFI, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 34.00 gallons.

The dimensions of the Silverado 1500 LS are 78.50 inches wide by 222.10 inches long. It sits 71.00 inches off the ground. It seats a standard three passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 133.00 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

There is a 36,000 mile, 36 month warranty with this vehicle, including a powertrain warranty of 36,000/36 miles/months. This is normal for this price range.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $19,250 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $17,421. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Standard Cab Pickup.

MPG Ratings

The Silverado 1500 LS received a miles-per-gallon rating of 15 - 16 in-city driving and 19 - 21 when it came to highway driving. Being a flex-powered green truck, this was within normal parameters.

In 2002 and 2003 the Silverado 1500 LS was availble in the exterior colors of Arrival Blue Metallic, Black, Dark Gray Metallic, Dark Green Metallic, Light Pewter Metallic, Summit White, and Victory Red.

What We Think of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The 2002 model began the promise of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The 2003 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chevrolet hopes that the Silverado 1500 LS will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

    I’m liking Hyundai over Chevrolet. It think it’s the difference in reliability. My first Silverado 1500 worked quite well, but the second one (a LS BTW) didn’t fare so well…
