The 2003 Silverado 1500 is an important vehicle to Chevrolet for the standard cab pickup market segment. The Base is a member of a series of five trim levels for the Silverado 1500 which include . The two-door truck with its four-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Chevrolet. There is strong competition from vehicles from Nissan.

Performance

The Silverado 1500 Base is equipped with a General Motors 5.3 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a General Motors 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The Silverado 1500 has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses coil front springs and leaf in the rear.

Fuel is handled for the Silverado 1500 is a SFI design, running on FLEX fuel. The FLEX is handled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 34.00 gallons.

Silverado 1500 Base Statistics

The Silverado 1500 is 222.10 inches long, 78.50 inches wide, and 71.00 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 133.00 inches. It is able to seat 3 comfortably.

The standard warranty period for the Silverado 1500 is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the standard cab pickup market.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $19,250 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $17,421. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Standard Cab Pickup.

Fuel Efficiency

The Silverado 1500 Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of 15 - 16 in-city driving and 19 - 21 when it came to long-distance. Being a flex-powered hybrid truck, this was subpar.

In 2002 and 2003 the Silverado 1500 Base was availble in the exterior colors of Arrival Blue Metallic, Black, Dark Gray Metallic, Dark Green Metallic, Light Pewter Metallic, Summit White, and Victory Red. Additional options were made available by the factory.

In Summary

There are several reasons why the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base sold well in 2003. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Chevrolet, specifically a Silverado 1500.
