Under the Hood

The restyled Suburban 1500 Z71 is equipped with a 5.3-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a General Motors four-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2003 version.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The Suburban 1500 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by torsion bar front springs and coil in the rear.

The Suburban 1500 is 219.30 inches long, 78.80 inches wide, and 75.60 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 130.00 inches. It is able to seat 9 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 2004 (MSRP) was $37,600, with a dealer invoice cost of $32,900. This price is on target the industry average price for a four-door Sport Utility.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2004 Suburban 1500 is a SFI system, running on FLEX . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design.

The 2004 Suburban 1500 gets 18 - 20 miles/gallon on the highway and only 14 - 15 in the city. This is subpar for a sport utility truck.
